Mini - the history

Alec Issigonis:

Sir Alec Issigonis is the creator of the Mini. He wanted to create a small and economic car with safe handling and affordable for everyone. But he did far more than that:

The Mini was the first car that had a sideways mounted engine, that supported front wheel drive. Furthermore it was the first car that had gears integrated in the oil pan. Today this goes without saying.

But above all, the superb handling of the Mini made and makes the Mini something special.

John Cooper:

John Cooper, a racingcar-constructor with experience in the Formula 1, dedicated his time to the Mini. Paddy Hopkirk as Pilot and Henry Liddon as Co-Pilot won the Ralley Monte Carlo in 1964 with this modified Mini. The Mini Cooper won altogether three times the most famous ralley of the world. Even nowadays, three decades later, the Mini takes part at the Ralley Monte Carlo and even makes it to the finishing line, which is remarkably looking at all the cars that don't make it that far.

Famous Mini - drivers:

Just to name a few famous owners: The Beatles (they had one each!), Peter Sellars and his wife Britt Ekland, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Brigitte Bardot, Dudley Moore, Cliff Richard, Lord Snowdon, Princess Alexandra, Prince Michael of Kent, Twiggy, Dame Margot Fonteyn and me, of course!
